Commonweal’s mission is to provide a forum for civil, reasoned debate on the interaction of faith with contemporary politics and culture. Read by a passionate audience of educated Catholics as well as readers from many other faiths, Commonweal presents well-argued, respectful points of view from across the ideological spectrum. In an often contentiously divided Catholic church and secular culture, its status as an independent, lay-run journal of opinion encourages conversations that can be difficult in other settings.

Since its founding in 1924 Commonweal has staked a claim for Catholic principles and perspective in American life. It has been credited with helping prepare American Catholics for Vatican II, and Commonweal’s current readers say it has helped them weather the church’s sexual-abuse scandal and work through questions related to the role of women, church teachings on sexuality, and other contemporary issues. The magazine has an ongoing interest in social justice, ecumenism, just-war teaching, liturgical renewal, and the interchange between Catholicism and liberal democracy. Today Commonweal publishes many of the leading Catholic theologians, writers and public figures in the United States.

Commonweal has a unique history of taking strong and controversial positions, often liberal and opinionated yet tolerant in tone. The editors condemned the firebombing of Dresden and the use of atomic weapons; they have criticized American racism; supported resistance to U.S. involvement in Vietnam; and took issue with the 1968 papal encyclical Humanae vitae but also the 1973 Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade. Today the magazine maintains prolife convictions while being critical of single-issue abortion politics, and provides a space for marginalized voices.

Commonweal is published 20 times a year in print as well as in digitally enhanced multimedia formats, including special issues each year dedicated to contemporary theology, interreligious dialogue, books, and fiction. Features of the digital edition include exclusive content, additional photos and artwork, video, interviews, and forums for exchanges with Commonweal editors and writers. It also operates a continuously updated website and blog at www.commonwealmagazine.org. It is edited by Catholic laypeople and published by the nonprofit Commonweal Foundation.

Latest reviews of Commonweal Magazine app for iPhone and iPad

Excellent transition
The move commonweal has made into the digital world is impressive. Easy to use, wonderful to have past editions archived and available for reference if needed. Excellent. Dr. Robert Stefanotti
Content = A+, App = FAIL
I love Commonweal. However, subscribing to anything but the print edition is one of the most frustrating and least rewarding experiences Ive had. This "app" continues this tradition. I am a merchant mariner and cant benefit from a print subscription. I once tried a PDF subscription but I was disappointed when I tried to combine it with access to online content. No dice. Only with print. When I saw that a subscription was available on the iPad I was hopeful - precipitously, as it turned out - that I might finally be able access both the regular editions and online content by subscription. Alas. Just try to "subscribe" to "the iPad version." All Ive been able to do is to purchase the most recent edition. I cant subscribe. Any link it subscribe takes me back to the App Store where I have the one and only option of opening the edition I already have! The only apparently functional subscription links are for the blessed print edition. Cant this be made easy? Or at least POSSIBLE? All I want is for you to take my money in exchange for your content! Why is this so hard? I would love for this to be a 5-star review, and it would be if the published content were the subject. As it is, I can only pray that some day, somehow, someone at Commonweal will empathize with modern communications media and its users. Can I be the only one who could benefit by a truly digital subscription system? And stop teasing me. If I cant subscribe on the App Store, stop linking me there.
Commonweal
This is a superb version of a great magazine. Its the best of those to which I subscribe.
Commonweal or millstone?
Spent half the morning trying to get this ap to work on my iPhone. Registration was painful. It worked, it didnt work. It took my login, then it didnt. Does not navigate easily. Red ad at the bottom while viewing articles is an eyesore and is very distracting. Wouldnt accept my print subscription number to get "full" access. Blah blah blah. Too bad, too. I was really looking forward to it. Christs peace be with you, But this ap is the antichrist.
Great on the road
I prefer print edition, but use the app when on the road. Easy to navigate and very good display.
